Tails
It starts in the dark.
The hypnotic sway of their iconic tails is unmistakeable and as we wait floating in the slowly brightening gloom, the shadows we’ve been searching for begin to appear.
On the edge of a pinnacle a trio of Pelagic Threshers cruise into the dawn light. Dropping in and out of view they become braver as time passes and eventually, one-by-one, they come in to investigate.
By the end of the dive I could have reached out and touched them, the ends of their tails brushing gently against the camera dome as they turn back into the black below.
A species that needs to be seen to be believed, and needs to be protected to be seen.
